Earthquake felt in Cheltenham

Earthquake was felt in homes in Cheltenham just before 1 o’clock last night. A thud which shook the walls of houses was felt across the whole of Midlands and as far away as Newcastle in the north and Bournemouth in the south. It turned out to be the biggest earthquake in the UK for nearly 25 years. The British Geological Survey informed the public that the epicentre of the 5.3 magnitude quake was near Market Rasen in Lincolnshire.

The last earthquake which shook Cheltenham with even more power was in September 2002 when the epicentre of the quake with magnitude of 5.0 was in Dudley.

  1. We were just going to bed when we felt the quake. We realised pretty quickly what it must have been, after checking the house etc. I was in Somerset in 1984, working at Butlins when the last big one happened....brought back memories.
